Programme

The interprofessional and innovative master's degree program in Biomedical Technologies is characterized by practice orientation and internationality. Lectures are embedded in a modern technological and medical environment and are supported by an interdisciplinary team of recognized scientists. Training is offered by experts in basic as well as clinical sciences and provides a comprehensive overview of the area. In the first year, students can choose two out of three specialization modules, allowing them to tailor the program to their individual interests. The second year of the master's program is flexible organized to allow students to gain practical experience in research institutes, industry or abroad.

Specializations provide in-depth knowledge and advanced research training in two focus areas of research at the University of Tübingen according to the student's individual interests. Mandatory courses offer competence-based fundamental knowledge and tools demanded from industry and clinic. Elective courses broaden the student's knowledge base in one of the other specialization fields. Alternatively, more technically interested students can choose courses at the University of Stuttgart.

Practical work experience in a research institute, in medical technology industry or abroad provides the students with valuable workplace skills, communication skills and experience in national and international teams. The Master's thesis represents a major component of the course and entails six month' full-time practical work in an academic or industrial laboratory or abroad on a novel research project. This element gives students experience in independently solving an experimental problem within the research field of modern Biomedical Technologies as well as writing an extended scientific report.

Job description and job opportunities

Graduates are well prepared for a variety of professional challenges and have excellent career perspectives in Biomedical Technologies. Alternativel, graduates may choose to embark upon a professional career with responsibility:

  • Design and development of medical devices for clinical application
  • Design, development and production of medical devices and instruments
  • Development and production of biological surfaces for implant materials
  • Research and development in the field of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine

Target group:

We are looking for students with a pronounced affinity and a deep interest for Biomedical Technologies and research questions in this field. This master's program at the University of Tübingen is an excellent choice for students seeking advanced academic and application-oriented research training in emerging fields of Biomedical Technologies, integrating excellent in the focus areas of implantology, bioimaging and nanoanalytics/interfaces.

Emphasis/Curriculum

1st year: Mandatory courses

  • Biomedical Technologies in Diagnostic and Therapy
  • Laboratory Techniques and Methods
  • Clinical Cases and Consequences for Medical Devices
  • Regulatory Affairs of Medical Devices

1st year:

Specialization (choose 2):

  • Biomedical Engineering

Students  Get fundamental overview over in vitro models as alternatives to animal models from the development to regulatory acceptance and use, with their advantages, limitations, and applications, gain insight in the most recently established technologies and basics of microfabrication and additive fabrication;Gain knowledge of ECM (focus on collagen and elastic fibres), properties of biomaterials, cell-ECM interactions

They understand the coupling and interaction between technical implants and tissue, material and bio-compatibility, rejection, knowledge about the passivation of surfaces and technical body parts of all kinds, principles of sensory and motor function

  • Bioimaging

Bioimaging imparts deeper knowledge regarding preclinial imaging and clinical application, i.e. positron-emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), optical imaging (OI), computer tomography (CT), ultrasound (US) and encloses the development of the future generation PET and mulimodality imaging equipment.

On the basis of special laboratory techniques different methods of measurement are demonstrated. For clinical application students discuss very special issues on Biomedical Technologies which are illustrated in practical sessions.

  • NanoBioanalytics

NanoBioanalytics integrate biological and molecular nanophysics, nanotechnology, biomedical measurement technology, scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, nanostructures, nanomechanics, label-free detection methods, scientific instrumentation and devices, transducers, electrical sensing of living cells, chip-based sensors, hard- and software development. On the basis of lectures, seminars and practical work experience students get insights into a very innovative field of research in Biomedical Technologies and acquire a fundamental knowledge on organization of matter. They get to know interdiciplinary methods of approach and discussion and develop the capability to analyze and solve problem definitions.

Elective courses (choose 12 ECTS):

  • NanoBioAnalytics – Lecture and Seminar
  • Biomedical Engineering– Lecture and Seminar
  • Bioimaging – Lecture and Seminar
  • Medtec Innovation: Seminar on the development process of a medical device from the industry perspective
  • Ethical and Social Aspects of Biomedical Technologies: Seminar on sustainability in biomedical technologies
  • NanoBioPhysics and scanninf probe microscopy: Lecture on nanoscience and applications of scanning probe microbiology
  • Medical Technology Aspects of Cardio-Vascular Medicine: Industry Seminar
  • Python course
  • Biostatistics
  • Courses at the University of Stuttgart with focus on technical and engineeing content, etc.: ceramics and composites for Implantology, actuating elements for instrument engineering, Interface Design, Technologies of medical imaging, optical systems in Medical Technologies, Nanotechnologies

2nd year:

  • Two practical work experiences in industry, clinic, university or abroad
  • Master thesis: working on an experimental problem within the research field of Biomedical Technologies

Admission/Entrance requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technologies or a recognized equivalent from an accredited insitution with 180 ECTS
  • A general higher education entrance certificate. Foreign certificates must be recognized by an accredited public authority as comparable.

Further application requirements are available from the program coordinator.

Foreign language competence:

Applicants must provide proof of their English skills at the C1 level.

Twenty-four places are available per year and will be awarded according to the applicant's qualifications and experience. Matriculation takes place every winter semester via the central administration office of the university. To be admitted to the Master's program, students must have completed their first degree. A ranking list is created based on the final grades or provisional final grades of the first degree. A bonus can additionally be awarded by the selection committee, especially for publications and academic prizes in scientific fields.

The program provides

  • Lectures and modules embedded in a modern technological and medical environment and supported by an interdisciplinary team of internationally recognized scientists
  • Excellent study conditions in small training groups with individual contact to researchers and clinicians.
